Regular Summer Training sessions are at 11:00 am Sundays at Agios Kosmas on the throwing field next to the running track. 8 April 2008 -- Spartans closed out the Championships with a thrilling home victory, 22-20, over Spartakos Salonika at Agios Andreas on Sunday 6 April 2008. Spartakos fielded only 12 players yet they fought bravely and Spartans trailed 5-15 at half-time. But in the first minute of the second half, Constantinos Hatzipanagou-Flamos (son of legendary Spartan Tany Hatzipanagou-Flamos), playing on the wing in his first seniors match, scored an incredible try from deep in Spartans territory by hacking a loose ball three times down the length of the pitch and diving on it in-goal under heavy pressure to score, which shifted the momentum of the game. John Tsogas and Dr. Dimitri Tsevas also scored a try each for the Spartans who were also awarded a penalty try when Adonis Demertzis was fouled while attempting to score. And finally, incredibly, Evan Bonoris kicked a conversion for the Spartans. Spartans take 2nd Place at National 7's Championships
Spartans at Zirinio Stadium on 30 March 2008 with their 2nd Place trophy at the Greek National 7-a-side Championships. Congratulations to the Springboks who defeated the Spartans in the final by a score of 24-0. Nine teams from seven clubs were entered in the competition. Spartans fielded three players from the Under-18's, including Stefanos Stephanou who scored three tries in his first seniors competition. 25 March 2008 -- Spartans lost to the Macedonians 15-20 at Agios Andreas on Sunday 23 March 2008. The halftime score was 5-15. John Tsogas scored three tries for the Spartans. The Macedonians fielded only 13 players, but the Spartans were reduced to 14 players early when Mike Nikas injured his knee in a tackle. Toli Hasogias played his first game of rugby at hooker and Milos Janicic from the U-18's was in the second row, but the Macedonian pack was stronger, which was the difference in the sporting contest. Spartans host Spartakos from Salonika on Sunday 6 April 2008 at Agios Andreas in the fourteenth and final round of the Greek Championships. 18 March 2008 -- Spartans were forced to forfeit their match with Athens RFC in the twelfth round of the Greek Championships on 8-9 March 2008 when Athens RFC insisted late on changing the day of the match.
Limassol Crusaders and Athens Spartans U-18's, 15 March 2008 At 1:30 pm on Saturday 15 March 2008 at Agios Andreas, the Spartans U-18's hosted the Limassol Crusaders U-18's, on tour from Cyprus. The Crusaders won the sporting match, 0-43. The halftime score was 0-12. Eighteen Spartans were joined by six kids from the three Salonika teams. Nick Bikakis captained the Spartans, and everyone got a chance to play. This was the first ever 15-a-side match played by an U-18's team in Greece. Then at 5:00 pm on the same field, the Spartans seniors lost 62-5 versus Iraklis. The halftime score was 45-0. Panaiotis Kallinikos scored a try for the Spartans. The match was to be played in Salonika in the 10th round of the Championships on 16-17 February, but was rescheduled for the same day as the U-18's match at the insistance of the Hellenic Rugby Union. As a result, four Spartans U-18's who also play for the seniors -- Nick Bikakis, John Lazoglou, Ben Marks and Romanos Arapis -- had to play two games in one afternoon. Among the seniors, Xenophon Latsoudis and Lucas Loury played with passion. Evan Bonoris captained the Spartans in the absence of Vasilis Kounelis who is doing his military service. Spartans host Macedonians on Sunday 23 March 2008 at Agios Andreas in the thirteenth round of the Greek Championships. 6 March 2008 -- Trikala was unable to field a team to play Spartans in Athens on Sunday 3 February 2008 in the ninth round of the Greek Championships. The tenth round of the Greek Championships (16-17 February 2008) was postponed by the Hellenic Rugby Union on account of the snowstorm. On Sunday 2 March 2008, the Spartans lost 7-61 to the Springboks in Athens. The half-time score was 0-26. Xenophon Latsoudis scored a try for Spartans which was converted by Lucas Loury. The Spartans youth played another good game: Romanos Arapis at scrumhalf, Nick Bikakis at #8 and Ben Marks at fullback. Spartans are scheduled to play Athens RFC in the twelfth round of the Greek Championships on 8-9 March 2008. 22 January 2008 -- On Sunday 20 January 2008, the Spartans traveled to Rhodes where they played poorly and lost 41-0 to the Colossi. The half-time score was 17-0. The few bright spots were provided by the Spartans youth. Romanos Arapis had another great game at scrumhalf. John Lazoglou played tough at hooker. Hasan Sarigoz made several exciting runs. And Ben Marks put in some good tackles. Spartans host Trikala in the ninth round of the Greek Championships on Sunday 3 February 2008. 7 January 2008 -- On Saturday 5 January 2008, the Spartans lost 5-55 at Spartakos Salonika. The half-time score was 5-15. The Spartans were able to field only 13 players because of injuries and players traveling for the holidays. John Tsongas scored a try for the Spartans. Spartans travel to Rhodes on Sunday 20 January 2008 to play the Colossi for the eighth round of the Greek Championships. 19 December 2007 -- On Sunday 16 December 2007, the Spartans won a hard game on the road against the Macedonians, 22-27. Conditions in Salonika were cold and gray. The Spartans scored a converted try early. The Macedonians rallied quickly to score a try and kept the ball in the forwards, but Spartans kicked a penalty then scored a try to lead 5-15 at half-time, then opened the second half with another try. But the Macedonians battled to the finish, even scoring a try at the final whistle. George Tsililis (2), Dimitris Tsevas and Manos Mastorakis scored tries, and Xenophon Latsoudis kicked a penalty and two conversions, for the Spartans. Spartans return to Salonika on Saturday 5 January 2008 to play Spartakos for the seventh round of the Greek Championships. 12 December 2007 -- Playing without a proper front row, the Spartans lost to Athens RFC 3-65 on Sunday 9 December 2007 at Agios Andreas. Xenophon Latsoudis kicked a penalty for the Spartans. Spartans play the Macedonians in Salonika on Sunday 16 December 2007 for the sixth round of the Greek Championships. 29 November 2007 -- The Spartans suffered a tough loss to the Attica Springboks on Sunday 25 November 2007 at Glyka Nera. The half-time score was 15-13, but the Springboks had too much depth on the bench and with numerous substitutions in the second half they prevailed 48-20. Andonis Demertzis, Markos Makrikostas and John Tsongas scored tries for the Spartans; Sam Paddison kicked a penalty and a conversion. Spartans host Athens RFC on Sunday 9 December 2007 for the fifth round of the Greek Championships. 11 November 2007 -- The Spartans battled to victory 10-3 over a powerful Iraklis Salonika side at Agios Andreas on Sunday 11 November 2007. In the opening minutes, Andonis Demertzis scored a try for Spartans with a strong run up the middle. Markos Makrikostas followed with a try and the half-time score was 10-0. Iraklis fought on and gained some momentum with a penalty in the second half, but despite their relentless pressure the Spartans defense held firm. Spartans play Springboks in two weeks for the fourth round of the Greek Championships. 29 October 2007 -- The Spartans prevailed 74-0 over the Megalkalyviotes (Trikala) on Sunday 28 October 2007 in Megala Kalyvia. The half-time score was 47-0. Two Spartans Under-18's made their Championship debut in the second half: Constantinos Fotinakopoulos on the wing and Romanos Arapis at scrum half. Scoring tries for the Spartans were: Andonis Demertzis, Panagiotis Kallinikos, John Koury (2), Markos Makrikostas (2), Mike Nikas, Stephanos Petritsopoulos (2), Arion Pineau, George Tsililis (2) and John Tsogas (2). George Tsililis and Xenophon Latsoudis each kicked a conversion for the Spartans. Spartans host Iraklis in two weeks for the third round of the Greek Championships. 19 October 2007 -- The Spartans played hard but lost to Rhodes 5-29 in the first round of the Greek Rugby Championships on Sunday 14 October 2007. Andonis Demertzis scored for the Spartans. Spartans travel to Trikala on Sunday 28 October 2007 for the second round of the Greek Championships. |
